Worst 5 moments of 2017

2017 has given us some bad times to remember this Christmas, Let's take a look back at the 5 worst moments of 2017.

Labour losing the election
(well they all lost is was a hung Parliament).

The Conservative Party (which had governed as a senior coalition partner from 2010 and as a single-party majority government from 2015) was defending a working majority of 17 seats against the Labour Party, the official opposition led by Jeremy Corbyn. Under the Fixed-term Parliaments Act 2011, an election had not been due until May 2020, but a call by Prime Minister Theresa May for a snap election was ratified by the necessary supermajority in a 522–13 vote in the House of Commons on April 2017. May had said that she hoped to secure a larger majority for the Conservative Party in order to "strengthen [her] hand in [the forthcoming Brexit] negotiations".

London Terror Attack

The June 2017 London Bridge attack was an Islamic terrorist attack in London, the United Kingdom, on 3 June 2017 whereby a van left the road and struck a number of pedestrians on London Bridge. After the van crashed, its three occupants ran to the nearby Borough Market area and began stabbing people in and around restaurants and pubs.

Eight people were killed and 48 were injured, including four unarmed police officers who attempted to stop the assailants. The three attackers, who wore fake explosive vests, were later shot dead by police.

The incident came less than three months after five people were killed in a similar vehicle-ramming attack in Westminster and less than two weeks after a bombing in Manchester killed 22.

3.
Manchester Terror Attack

The Manchester Arena bombing was an Islamist terror attack in Manchester, United Kingdom. On 22 May 2017, a shrapnel-laden homemade bomb was detonated as people were leaving Manchester Arena following a concert by the American singer Ariana Grande. Twenty-three people were killed, including the attacker, and over 500 were injured.

After initial suspicions of a terrorist network, police later said they believed the bomber, Salman Ramadan Abedi, had largely acted alone but that others had been aware of his plans.

120,000 dead because of Tory Austerity

The Conservatives have been accused of “economic murder” for austerity policies which a new study suggests have caused 120,000 deaths.

The paper found that there were 45,000 more deaths in the first four years of Tory-led efficiencies that would have been expected if funding had stayed at pre-election levels.

On this trajectory that could rise to nearly 200,000 excess deaths by the end of 2020, even with the extra funding that has been earmarked for public sector services this year.

Real terms funding for health and social care fell under the Conservative-led Coalition Government in 2010, and the researchers conclude this “may have produced” the substantial increase in deaths.

1.
Grenfell

The Grenfell Tower fire broke out on 14 June 2017 at the 24-storey Grenfell Tower block of public housing flats in North Kensington, Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, West London. It caused 71 deaths, including one stillbirth, and over 70 injuries. Occupants of 23 of the 129 flats died, but 223 people escaped. Inquests for all 70 victims have been opened and adjourned at Westminster Coroner's Court.

The Grenfell Tower Inquiry held its first hearing on 14 September 2017, and evidential hearings started in October. Police and fire services believe the fire started accidentally in a fridge-freezer on the fourth floor. The rapid growth of the fire is thought to have been accelerated by the building's exterior cladding, which is of a common type in widespread use.  An independent review of building regulations and fire safety is in progress.

Emergency services received the first report of the fire at 00:54 local time. It burned for about 60 hours until finally being extinguished. More than 250 London Fire Brigade firefighters and 70 fire engines were involved from stations all across London in efforts to control the fire. Over 100 London Ambulance Service crews on at least 20 ambulances attended, joined by the specialist Hazardous Area Response Team. The Metropolitan Police Service and London's Air Ambulance also assisted the rescue effort.
